Underwriting & Claims Operations Manager

About the role

General Insurance CIC South Sudan is looking for an Underwriting & Claims Operations Manager to provide leadership and strategic direction for its subsidiary, delivering growth and underwriting profitability through careful selection and adequate pricing of risks. The role covers underwriting, claims, compliance, team management and business development.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, circulate and regularly update underwriting guidelines, and review accepted risks against them and the reinsurance programme
• Issue and approve quotations within specified limits, and manage renewals for turnaround time and retention
• Manage policy documentation, approvals, payments and expenses within the underwriting department, and co-ordinate underwriting activities
• Review and implement risk mitigation measures, and advise management on reinsurance
• Analyse claims information, approve payable claims, develop claims strategies and procedures, and review claims reserves
• Set performance standards and service levels, resolve customer complaints and disputes, and liaise with lawyers on claims litigation
• Prepare management reports and statutory returns, and engage intermediaries and business partners to grow the business
• Appraise, coach and mentor staff, allocate resources, approve leave, and take part in planning, budgeting and meetings

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in a business-related field (master's degree desirable)
• At least 8 years of relevant experience, including 3 at management level
• ACII or AIIK qualification (mandatory)
• Understanding of competitors and the working environment

Required skills

• Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal and negotiation skills
• Good analytical and problem-solving skills
• Computer literacy in MS Office and other office applications
• Technical competence in insurance and basic knowledge of AKI and IRA regulations
• Customer focus, business acumen, negotiation and influence, and leadership competencies such as planning, accountability and conflict management
