Volunteer Community Health Assistant

About the role

The International Rescue Committee seeks a dedicated Volunteer Community Health Assistant to support health promotion and service delivery in Westlands, Nairobi. This role involves direct community engagement, health education, and coordination with local health structures.

Key responsibilities

• Provide basic health services such as immunisation, health education, and management of common illnesses like diarrhea and malaria.
• Support maternal and child health by promoting antenatal/post‑natal care and breastfeeding.
• Educate communities on hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, and water safety through household visits and community campaigns.
• Work with Community Health Committees, CHPs and local leaders to implement health strategies and facilitate referrals.
• Oversee and mentor CHPs, organise training, and ensure regular supervision.
• Maintain accurate data collection, reporting and analysis using MOH tools and digital platforms.
• Assist in the rollout of the national community health strategy and participate in health surveys and coordination meetings.

Required profile

• Diploma in Community Health, Public Health, Environmental Health or related field; registered with a recognised regulatory body.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience in community or public health, with proven work supporting the Kenya Ministry of Health’s Community Health Strategy.
• Strong understanding of MOH and county health department functions.
• Excellent oral and written communication, cultural sensitivity and ability to work in challenging, low‑resource environments.
• Experience in low‑resource or refugee settings is an advantage.
