WASH Officer – Sanitation and Hygiene

About the role

The International Rescue Committee is seeking a WASH Officer to lead sanitation and hygiene initiatives in Kakuma. You will provide technical oversight, design interventions, and ensure coordination with health, nutrition, DRR and livelihood sectors.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, design and develop specifications, SOPs and technical reports for hygiene and sanitation promotion.
• Implement promotion activities in line with donor guidelines, humanitarian standards and approved SOPs.
• Coordinate with the WATSAN Officer to align hygiene promotion with water and sanitation interventions.
• Facilitate training for WMCs, SMCs, CHWs, CHEWs, youth groups and local authorities on improved hygiene practices.
• Monitor and evaluate program performance, ensuring gender‑inclusive and disability‑sensitive approaches.
• Collaborate with partners, stakeholders and community structures to ensure complementarity of sectoral interventions.

Required profile

• Relevant tertiary education in public health, environmental health, WASH or a related field.
• Proven experience in designing and managing hygiene and sanitation projects in humanitarian settings.
• Strong ability to work with diverse communities and promote inclusive participation.
• Excellent communication and coordination skills with partners and local authorities.

Required skills

• Knowledge of WASH standards, SOP development and humanitarian guidelines.
• Experience in project monitoring, evaluation and reporting.
• Ability to conduct capacity‑building trainings for community groups.
