Assistant Editor – Amharic Service

About the role

The BBC World Service is establishing a Horn of Africa Language Services Unit in Nairobi. As Assistant Editor for the Amharic service, you will lead the day‑to‑day editorial output across radio, digital, video and social platforms, reporting to the regional News Editor.

Key responsibilities

• Drive the transformation of BBC Amharic into a digital‑first, video‑led service, setting editorial ambition and fostering a culture of continuous learning.
• Develop and implement a data‑driven video strategy to grow reach, especially among younger and female audiences.
• Commission, edit and deliver high‑impact journalism, including investigations, explainers and digital‑first stories.
• Collaborate with other Horn of Africa Assistant Editors and the Production Hub to share stories, avoid duplication and enhance multimedia output.
• Embed performance awareness in the team, using audience analytics to optimise content mix and editorial priorities.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading editorial teams and delivering multi‑platform news content.
• Strong journalistic instincts combined with a clear ambition for digital growth.
• Ability to use audience insight and analytics to shape editorial decisions.
