Chemical Engineering Intern – Phase-Change Materials

About the role

Seryn makes reusable phase-change cold packs that keep fresh produce, exports and medicines cold for hours without electricity, and is currently piloting them with vendors at Marikiti market. It is looking for a chemical engineering intern for a 3-month, lab-based internship in Nairobi starting 5 November 2026.

Key responsibilities

• Formulate and test phase-change materials (PCMs) at 12 °C, 5 °C and 0 °C, including salt hydrates and organic blends.
• Run freeze-thaw cycles and log temperatures to measure hold time and stability.
• Help solve problems such as phase separation and supercooling.
• Help with pack filling, sealing, and leak and drop tests.
• Keep clean lab records and report results each week.

Required profile

• Chemical engineering student on industrial attachment (3rd year or higher) or recent graduate.
• Comfortable in a lab and careful with chemicals and data.
• Curious, hands-on and able to work with little supervision.

Required skills

• Basic knowledge of thermodynamics and heat transfer.
• Bonus: experience with Excel or Python for data, or with Arduino/ESP32 sensors.
