Data Engineer - BI Platform

About the role

Moringa School is investing in a stronger Business Intelligence (BI) function and is looking for a Data Engineer to join its BI team. The role works closely with the BI Analyst to design, build and scale the data infrastructure behind decision-making, turning data from admissions, marketing, operations and finance into reliable insights. It is a full-time, hands-on engineering position based in Nairobi, reporting to the Director, Technology & Data.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain data pipelines and ETL/ELT workflows that move data from source systems (admissions, finance, operations, Salesforce and others) into the BI platform, with validation, testing and quality checks.
• Automate data ingestion, transformation and loading, monitor pipeline health, set up alerts for failures or data quality issues and troubleshoot production problems.
• Develop and maintain the internal BI platform using Python-based frameworks (Django / Flask) and Plotly Dash for interactive dashboards, and manage deployment, versioning and basic DevOps practices.
• Build, optimise and document data models (star/snowflake schemas, dimensional models) and enforce modelling standards and naming conventions.
• Work with the BI Analyst and stakeholders across operations, finance, admissions and other departments to turn business questions into data products, and present technical findings clearly to leadership.
• Champion data quality, access controls and data security, and identify ways to improve the data infrastructure.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, Data/Software Engineering, Statistics or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 6+ years of professional experience in data engineering, analytics engineering or a closely related software/data role.
• Proven experience designing and building ETL/ELT pipelines, including scheduling, orchestration and error handling.
• Experience working with non-technical stakeholders and delivering usable data products.

Required skills

• Strong Python, including production-grade applications or services.
• Django and/or Flask for internal web applications, and Plotly Dash for dashboards.
• Strong SQL and experience designing and optimising relational database schemas and queries.
• Understanding of data modelling (dimensional modelling, normalisation, star/snowflake schemas).
• Preferred: Airflow, Prefect, Dagster, Git, Docker, CI/CD, cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), Power BI or Tableau, and experience in the education sector.
