Declarant Clerk / Customs Declarant

About the role

A logistics client is hiring a Declarant Clerk for a full-time, on-site position in Limuru, Kenya. The role prepares and processes customs documentation so that imports, exports and transit of goods are lawful and efficient, ensuring shipments comply with customs regulations and are cleared quickly while minimising delays, storage, demurrage and penalty costs.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and submit import, export and transit customs declarations through the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) iCMS system.
• Verify shipping documents such as commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, air waybills, certificates of origin, import declaration forms and permits.
• Classify goods using HS codes and calculate customs duties, VAT, excise duty and other levies.
• Ensure compliance with the East African Community Customs Management Act, KRA regulations, KEBS requirements and other government requirements.
• Coordinate customs clearance with KRA, KEBS, KEPHIS, port health, shipping lines, CFS, freight forwarders and transporters.
• Monitor cargo from arrival to release and resolve queries, discrepancies and inspection issues.
• Prepare customs valuation documents and records for audits, and advise clients on customs procedures and tariff classifications.
• Liaise with transport and warehouse teams and prepare reports on customs activities and clearance performance.

Required profile

• Degree in a business-related field, preferably Shipping and Logistics.
• At least 2 years' experience in a similar role.
• Knowledge of customs declarations, import/export documentation, trade compliance, HS code classification, duty and tax computation, and freight forwarding coordination.

• Proficiency in KRA iCMS and customs documentation systems.
• Attention to detail, problem solving and stakeholder management.
