District Veterinary Medical Officer

About the role

The District Veterinary Medical Officer serves as the primary veterinary liaison for food safety, animal welfare, and disease surveillance within an assigned district. This position works under the Office of Field Operations and provides critical support for ante‑mortem and post‑mortem procedures, export certification, and foreign animal disease monitoring.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the main point of contact for all veterinary matters related to food safety and animal welfare in the district.
• Conduct and oversee ante‑mortem and post‑mortem examinations, including proper disposition of animal carcasses.
• Perform foreign animal disease surveillance and report findings to the appropriate authorities.
• Issue and manage export certifications for animal products.
• Collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to ensure compliance with veterinary regulations.

Required profile

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from an AVMA‑accredited institution.
• Alternatively, a foreign veterinary degree meeting ECFVG certification, a full unrestricted veterinary license, and proof of English proficiency.
• Successful completion of the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) or equivalent.
