Examiner Inspector – Railway Structural Examination

About the role

Network Rail is seeking an Examiner Inspector to carry out structural examinations of railway assets across the Eastern Region. This home‑based position involves regular travel to sites in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and London, providing critical safety and condition assessments for bridges and other structures.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct structural examinations of railway assets to assess condition and compliance with standards.
• Prepare and submit detailed examination and condition reports for review by Examining Engineers.
• Ensure reports are technically compliant, consistent and delivered within required timescales.
• Perform reconnaissance visits and support specialist examinations as needed.
• Participate in on‑call duties, responding rapidly to bridge strikes and other incidents.
• Make on‑site technical decisions regarding safety issues, structural condition and operational capability.
• Provide safety‑critical site support and investigate incidents related to examination activities.
• Address technical issues identified through report reviews, briefings or audits and contribute to quality, safety and continual improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• Full UK driving licence.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Well‑organised, self‑motivated and committed to safe working practices.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
