International Humanitarian Law and Data Protection Officer

About the role

The International Humanitarian Law and Data Protection Officer will support the Kenya Red Cross Society in implementing its mandate on IHL, protecting the Red Cross emblem, and ensuring compliance with Kenya’s data protection legislation. The role involves research, technical guidance, awareness activities, and maintaining compliance systems under the supervision of the Head of Legal Services.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct dissemination and awareness activities on International Humanitarian Law for staff, volunteers and partners.
• Research and prepare legal briefs, advisory notes and presentations on IHL and related humanitarian matters.
• Monitor legislative and policy developments and advise the Head of Department on required actions.
• Manage cases of misuse of the Red Cross emblem, maintain registers and produce periodic reports.
• Support implementation of the data protection framework, provide guidance on personal data handling, and maintain records of processing activities.
• Conduct preliminary compliance reviews, handle data‑subject requests, and assist with breach assessments.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Law from a recognised university.
• At least two years of experience in legal services, compliance, data protection or humanitarian affairs.
• Understanding of International Humanitarian Law and Kenya’s data protection framework.
• Professional training or certification in data protection or IHL is an advantage.
• Advocate of the High Court of Kenya is an advantage.
