Junior Heavy Plant Mechanic (NYS-Trained)

About the role

A client of Stratostaff East Africa, which leases and maintains construction plant and machinery for road, dam and civil works projects across Kenya, is looking for a Junior Heavy Plant Mechanic. The role supports the maintenance and repair of the equipment fleet at project sites and calls for an NYS-trained mechanic with strong technical aptitude, able to work independently and within a maintenance team.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in preventive and corrective maintenance of heavy equipment such as ADTs, graders, excavators and rollers.
• Carry out routine inspections, identify faults and perform basic mechanical repairs under supervision.
• Support troubleshooting and escalate complex mechanical or electrical issues to senior mechanics.
• Maintain service records, tool inventories and maintenance logs.
• Follow safety standards and workshop procedures, and provide field support during active projects to reduce downtime.

Required profile

• NYS-trained plant mechanic.
• Diploma or certificate in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering or a related technical field.
• 4 to 6 years of experience with heavy plant and construction equipment.
• Ability to work long hours and adapt to dynamic construction site environments.
• Valid driver's licence; experience in an equipment leasing or construction company is an added advantage.

Required skills

• Basic electrical knowledge of heavy equipment systems and ability to diagnose minor issues.
• Use of diagnostic tools, repair manuals and workshop equipment.
• Strong understanding of hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems in heavy machinery.
