Lead Wastewater Treatment Operator

About the role

The City of Geneva is looking for a Lead Wastewater Treatment Operator to oversee daily operations of its Wastewater Treatment Plant. Reporting to the plant supervisor, you will ensure efficient plant performance, support capital planning, and maintain regulatory compliance during a period of major equipment upgrades.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise daily plant operations, including clarifiers, digesters, centrifuges, lift stations, electrical systems and SCADA.
• Inspect equipment, evaluate process performance, and perform routine or emergency maintenance.
• Direct and mentor staff, assist with hiring, training, coaching and performance counseling.
• Collaborate with the Environmental Compliance Coordinator on laboratory analysis and sample quality.
• Use laboratory data to adjust processes and guide operational decisions.
• Coordinate with contractors, prepare RFPs/bids, and prioritize capital improvement projects.
• Maintain compliance with NPDES permits and prepare required IEPA and USEPA reports.
• Respond to after‑hours emergencies and support snow‑removal operations as needed.

Required profile

• State of Illinois Class 2 Wastewater Operator license (must obtain Class 1 within one year).
• Minimum six years of progressively responsible wastewater treatment experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree in biology, chemistry or related field preferred.
• Strong analytical ability to interpret process data and identify abnormalities.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Excel and similar database tools for data entry and analysis.
• Experience operating and troubleshooting SCADA systems.
• Knowledge of NPDES, IEPA and USEPA reporting requirements.
