Part-Time Radar Trainer (ECDIS, ARPA)

About the role

Mount Kenya University is seeking a part‑time trainer to deliver theoretical and practical instruction on ECDIS, ARPA and RADAR systems. The role involves classroom teaching, simulator sessions and guiding students toward maritime certification.

Key responsibilities

• Teach both theory and hands‑on operation of ECDIS, ARPA and RADAR equipment.
• Run simulator‑based training scenarios and real‑time navigation exercises.
• Develop lesson plans, instructional materials and assessments aligned with IMO STCW standards.
• Mentor students through certification requirements and operational competency checks.
• Evaluate student performance, provide feedback and maintain progress records.
• Update training modules to reflect the latest technology and regulatory changes.
• Collaborate with other trainers and technical staff to maintain and upgrade simulation equipment.
• Participate in faculty meetings, workshops and professional development activities.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Nautical Science, Marine Navigation or a related field.
• Certificate of Competency (CoC) as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (STCW II/1) or higher.
• Valid ECDIS certification and proven experience with ARPA and RADAR systems.
• Minimum 2‑3 years of sea service and prior teaching or training experience in a maritime institution.
