Principal Accountant

About the role

The Principal Accountant manages financial accounting and reporting operations at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), a full-time management-level position in Nairobi. The role covers budgeting, financial controls, reporting and liaison with auditors.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement financial regulations, policies, strategies and plans
• Prepare and review budgets, and implement budgetary and expenditure control
• Maintain books of accounts and financial records, including those for projects and programmes
• Monitor revenue collection and expenditure against approved budgets, and monitor petty cash
• Verify bank reconciliation statements and records relating to government grants and donor funds
• Develop and implement internal financial controls and manage financial risk
• Prepare financial and management reports and statements
• Liaise with administration to maintain the college asset register, and with internal and external auditors on audit queries
• Ensure compliance with financial statutory obligations and circulars, and authorise payments and claims within approved limits

Required profile

• Cumulative nine years of relevant work experience, including three years as Senior Accountant, Senior Finance Officer or in a comparable position
• Bachelor's degree in Commerce (Accounting/Finance), Finance, Economics, Business Administration or Business Management, or an equivalent qualification
• Part III Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K) by KASNEB or an equivalent qualification
• Registered with ICPAK, ACCA or an equivalent body and in good standing
• Certificate in a management course of at least four weeks from a recognised institution
• Merit shown through work performance and results
