Regional Safety & Security Director (East Africa)

About the role

The Regional Safety and Security Director (RSSD) is one of the most senior leadership roles in the East Africa region, providing strategic leadership for safety, security and humanitarian access. The role advises the Regional Vice President on risk-informed decisions, is a full member of the Regional Management Team and of IRC's global safety and security team, and reports jointly to the RVP and the Senior Director for Safety and Security. It is an on-site position in Nairobi.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as principal safety and security advisor to the Regional Vice President and lead crisis management when required
• Partner with Country Directors to embed security risk management and humanitarian access in country Strategy Action Plans
• Lead the identification, analysis and mitigation of security risks, promote compliance with Security Minimum Standards and champion duty of care and safeguarding
• Integrate Gender, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (GEDI) and PEERS commitments into security policies and practices
• Build the security capacity of partners and maintain a network of security focal points
• Enable principled humanitarian access, develop access guidelines and contingency plans, and follow up on breaches of the Code of Conduct
• Recruit and select key S&S positions, co-manage and mentor direct reports, and supervise the Regional Humanitarian Access and Safety Coordinator
• Deliver regional capacity-building and training, including incident management drills, and support incident reporting and analysis

Required profile

• At least 10 years of experience in international humanitarian assistance with proven security management capability
• Prior East Africa experience in an NGO humanitarian environment
• On-site role in Nairobi
