Senior Product Engineer - Payments Risk

About the role

WeTravel is hiring a Senior Product Engineer for its Payments Risk function in Nairobi. The team turns decisions about organizer payouts into automated systems: how much of a payout is held back, how fast it is released, and what happens when an account goes bad. The role leads projects end-to-end, from discovery with Product, Payment Operations and the KYC/Verification team to build, rollout and monitoring, while shaping what is assessed and measured.

Key responsibilities

• Own the systems behind payout decisions, including exposure, reserves, disputes, balances, payout history and verification state
• Lead projects end-to-end: discovery, solution design, build, rollout and monitoring
• Influence what is assessed, what is measured and which manual steps should be automated
• Balance protection against user experience and own the reliability of shipped code
• Raise the engineering bar across the team and mentor others

Required profile

• 7+ years of product engineering expertise, with 4+ years on risk, fraud or underwriting systems that move real money
• Deep knowledge of exposure and credit models, decision and rules engines, holds, reserves, payout limits, transaction monitoring and the ledgers behind them
• Direct production on-call experience, including post-mortems and incident response
• Excellent communication skills and comfort in a distributed, multicultural environment
• Preferred: experience at a merchant of record, payment facilitator, marketplace or lender, and experience automating an underwriting or periodic review program

Required skills

• Strong backend mastery in Ruby on Rails, Kotlin, Python, Go, Java or Node.js, with quick ramp-up on Ruby
• React/TypeScript, Kubernetes, MongoDB, MySQL, Postgres, CockroachDB and Snowflake
• Paginated use of AI tools and mentoring others on AI concepts
