Senior Software Engineer – Remote

About the role

GiveDirectly is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to design and build the systems that deliver cash assistance worldwide. The position is fully remote, with occasional travel for team retreats or field visits.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement scalable, reliable backend services for donor platforms, payment delivery, and rapid‑response tools.
• Own end‑to‑end development of new features, from architecture through deployment and monitoring.
• Improve CI/CD pipelines, reduce manual steps, and increase automated test coverage.
• Collaborate with product, operations, and data teams to translate real‑world needs into technical solutions.
• Debug and resolve production incidents, focusing on root‑cause analysis and long‑term fixes.

Required profile

• 4+ years of professional experience building production‑grade software.
• Strong alignment with GiveDirectly’s values and demonstrated emotional intelligence, problem‑solving, and inclusivity.
• High degree of ownership and autonomy, proactively improving systems.
• Excellent analytical and communication skills for cross‑functional collaboration.

Required skills

• Strongly‑typed, object‑oriented languages such as Java, C# or Go.
• Scripting languages like Python or Ruby.
• Experience with backend architecture: databases, cloud services and APIs.
• Proficiency with AWS and production‑grade CI/CD pipelines.
• Knowledge of microservice or serverless architectures.
• Ability to design, deploy and monitor scalable infrastructure.
