About the role
The Supervisory Law Enforcement Officer (Patrol Captain) leads public safety and law‑enforcement activities on National Forest System lands. Reporting to senior forest management, the officer provides technical advice, develops policy, and coordinates multi‑agency operations.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, analyze, and evaluate new or revised law‑enforcement policy statements and guidelines.
- Serve as a full member of the Forest Supervisors' Management/Leadership Team, advising on complex short‑ and long‑range public‑safety issues.
- Identify budget needs and create work plans for forest or zone public‑safety and patrol programs.
- Coordinate with Federal, state, and local law‑enforcement agencies to plan and conduct operations on forest lands.
- Develop and administer cooperative agreements with other government entities.
- Act as primary liaison between uniformed personnel and regional special agents for investigative case work.
- Plan and prioritize work for subordinates, set schedules, and adjust priorities as needed.
- Assist with preliminary investigations or conduct full investigations of misdemeanors, regulatory offenses, and federal crimes, including undercover work and informant development.
Required profile
- U.S. citizen or national.
- Selective Service registration for males born after 12/31/1959, unless exempt.
- Successful background investigation, fingerprint check, and E‑Verify verification.
- Completion of a one‑year probationary period (or creditable prior service).
- Direct‑deposit payroll requirement.
- Firearms qualification as required by the Gun Control Act of 1968 and related amendments.
- Pass pre‑employment and random drug tests.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle.
