Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO)

About the role

The Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) will lead the implementation and enforcement of the contractor’s safety program on a construction site in Westlands, Kenya. Reporting to senior management, the SSHO ensures compliance with all applicable safety regulations and oversees the Accident Prevention Plan (APP).

Key responsibilities

• Serve as the onsite SSHO, administering the contractor’s safety program and the approved APP.
• Maintain continuous onsite presence during all work activities to verify adherence to safety requirements.
• Supervise at least one Competent Person at each project site, ensuring they are trained and qualified.
• Ensure compliance with EM 385-1-1 Section 1, 29 CFR 1926.16, and related inter‑agency safety standards.
• Conduct regular safety inspections, incident investigations, and corrective action follow‑up.
• Coordinate with government representatives, contractors, and site personnel on safety matters.

Required profile

• Minimum five (5) years of experience preparing and enforcing safety programs on similarly sized contracts, or three (3) years with a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential or a safety‑and‑health degree.
• Successful completion of an OSHA 30‑hour Construction Safety course or equivalent.
• Active compliance with 24 hours of formal safety coursework every four years.
• Ability to read, speak, and comprehend English for contract requirements and emergency procedures.
• Valid passport (minimum one year) and ability to obtain required visas.
• Pass contract medical requirements and maintain ongoing compliance.
