Laboratory Technologist

About the role

Mpala Research Centre is seeking a skilled Laboratory Technologist to deliver high‑quality laboratory services for research, conservation and scientific activities. The role involves performing DNA‑based analyses, microscopy, PCR and next‑generation sequencing, while ensuring safe and efficient laboratory operations.

Key responsibilities

• Perform laboratory analysis using DNA extraction, PCR, microscopy, NGS and related techniques according to research needs.
• Support field sample collection, receipt, processing, storage and tracking of incoming specimens.
• Maintain equipment through routine calibration, maintenance and decontamination, and manage biosafety, biosecurity and waste procedures.
• Prepare technical reports, document results and flag any anomalies to the Laboratory Manager.
• Maintain accurate records, inventories and SOPs, and assist with internal audits and accreditation activities.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology or a related field.
• Practical experience with DNA extraction, PCR and microscopy; experience with NGS is an advantage.
• Knowledge of laboratory biosafety, biosecurity, waste management and quality assurance.
• Strong analytical, record‑keeping and problem‑solving skills.
