Volunteer Children & Student Librarian

About the role

The Volunteer Children & Student Librarian will work on‑site at Kadibo Community Library in Nairobi, supporting daily library operations and creating a welcoming environment for young readers. The role combines hands‑on library tasks with leading reading circles and homework support sessions.

Key responsibilities

• Organise and shelve library materials, ensuring collections are tidy and accessible.
• Assist children and students in locating age‑appropriate books and resources.
• Plan and lead reading circles and homework support sessions for young patrons.
• Conduct basic literacy and study‑skills activities.
• Manage circulation tasks such as lending, returns and simple record‑keeping.
• Guide users on library rules, services and safe use of the space.
• Collaborate with other volunteers, teachers and caregivers to promote library programmes.

Required profile

• Certificate or diploma in Library & Information Science, Librarianship or a related field (students and recent graduates welcome).
• Knowledge of basic library services, collection organisation and simple cataloguing.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a patient, child‑centred approach.
• Ability to engage children and young adults in reading and learning activities.
• Availability to work full‑time on‑site in a community‑focused environment.
