Freelance Project Officer (Grant Management)

About the role

DW Akademie, Deutsche Welle's centre for international media development, journalism training and knowledge transfer, is looking for a freelance Project Officer to support its Kenya and Ethiopia Program. The assignment runs from January to December 2027, providing project and grant management and financial monitoring support for various projects. It is based in Nairobi, with about 16 working days per month, and can grow to 220 days if more projects are secured.

Key responsibilities

• Support cooperation with the partner organisation and oversee implementation of activities
• Assist in coordinating the partner exit process and handing over the project to a new partner
• Help grant-receiving organisations prepare grant applications, including activity plans and budgets
• Ensure effective communication with grantees and smooth project implementation
• Support report writing in line with grant requirements and on time
• Assist grantees with financial management and accounting processes for grant-funded projects, including internal information management for applications and reporting, and accurate financial records

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, International Development, Project Management or a related field
• At least three years of relevant experience in grant and project management, including financial monitoring and reporting
• Experience with EU-, BMZ- and/or other international donor-funded projects
• Experience developing proposals and grant applications
• Excellent written and spoken English
• Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
• Experience with civil society organisations or international cooperation is an advantage
