Senior Software Engineer (Fundraising) - Remote

About the role

GiveDirectly delivers cash directly to millions of people living in poverty, and this role uses engineering to support fundraising: delighting donors, helping fundraisers, recording donations and explaining what happens to gifts. It involves some website development and a lot of backend work. The position is remote, with meetings across East Africa time and US Eastern time, and occasional travel to the US, Europe and Africa.

Key responsibilities

• Delight donors, help fundraisers and get donations recorded and safely started on their way to recipients
• Work independently, with few constraints, alongside one other fundraising engineer
• Build on a mix of modern and legacy systems, including Laravel, PHP, plain JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Salesforce, WordPress and CSV data from partners
• Be on-call on peak donation days (Giving Tuesday and the end of the year), including owning incidents and debugging legacy code
• Work directly with non-engineers on messy, poorly defined, rapidly changing tasks

Required profile

• Fluent in English and 4+ years of engineering experience
• Right to work in one of the countries GiveDirectly can hire from
• Happy working autonomously, from defining work to testing, launching, fixing bugs and on-call duty
• Willing to travel a few weeks a year to meet colleagues in the US, Europe and Africa

Required skills

• Laravel, PHP, plain JavaScript, HTML and CSS
• Salesforce, WordPress and SQL
• Comfortable wrangling CSV files and legacy systems

• No-negotiation pay based on role, location and cost of living, with a 15% performance bonus at target
• Kenya base salary of $112,350, with an annual benefits stipend of $8,453
