Legal Officer – Corporate & Institutional Law

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Legal Officer to join its Corporate Services Division, Legal Unit in Nairobi. Reporting to the Senior Legal Officer, the incumbent will support UNEP’s corporate interests by providing expert legal advice, drafting and negotiating agreements, and representing the organization in internal UN justice matters.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on corporate and institutional matters, including interpretation of the UN Charter, UN Financial and Staff Regulations, UNEP Partnership Policy and Private Sector Engagement Policy.
• Draft, negotiate and review legal instruments such as MoUs, agreements, contracts with Member States, NGOs, UN entities, private sector and academic partners.
• Advise on partner vetting, procurement contracts, intellectual property issues and the use of UN name and emblem.
• Represent UNEP in personnel matters before the UN Management Advice and Evaluation Section and the UN Dispute Tribunal, preparing responses, motions and settlement agreements.
• Provide legal support on human resources, internal administrative law, and investigations related to Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, sexual harassment and OIOS inquiries.
• Conduct extensive legal research, prepare opinions and guide junior staff members.
